Communication Types

There are many people and they always concern in people who are close to each other, especially. For example, people talk with friends, play baseball with teammates, and help to pass heavy stuff and so on every day. According to Uemura, the reason why people communicate with others consists of 8 desires, survival, co-operation, personal, social, practical, economic, information and play (2). Therefore, communication is necessary and very important in life. Then, communication can be divided into three types, intrapersonal communication, interpersonal communication and small group communication.

The first category is intrapersonal communication. This type is done by only one person. Many people think this communication is not in communication category, but this is one of communication style. According to Nobe, the purpose of intrapersonal communication is to think, reason, analyze and reflect (2). For instance, people wish persuade Dad to give money and wish a class to be finished earlier in heart are including in this type. These acts are ’monologue’. This type is free, so people can do this type of communication wherever and whenever they want to. This communication is a core for other communications.

The second communication is interpersonal communication. This type is done between two persons. The main style of this communication is conversation. Therefore, first impression, and nonverbal communication like facial expression, posture, gesture, tone of voice, touching, spacing and systematic use of time are important. There is a difference between men and women in face-to-face conversation. According to Ikeguchi and Yashiro, men are interested in information; women are interested in interaction (32). For example, while women talk about personal problems, men talk about impersonal information like sports, cars, computers, or hobbies. Therefore, when a girl and a boy are talking, an inconsistency may happen.

The final category is small group communication. Small group communication consists of three persons to ten persons. The common purpose of this communication is to share information, generate ideas, and solve problems and help. In this communication, people can share a specified place and talk with each other directly. According to Kume, who is a Rikkyo University teacher, this communication is influenced by each country’s culture (73). For example, in Japan people consider politeness important, so the Japanese often use polite expression. On the other hand, in North American people consider friendly important, so the North American speak friendly for everyone. Therefore, this communication indicates each peculiar culture.

In conclusion, there are three type of communication. First is intrapersonal communication which is by the self. Second is interpersonal communication which is between two persons. Finally is small group communication which is from three to ten persons inclusive. Each communication has a characteristic and is acted daily, so people should know each characteristic and use each merit. People communicate well, and get a good stimulus and wide field of views.
